The same LEGO® set can be bought new, second-hand from a private seller, or refurbished from a specialist. Each option has its place. Here's how they compare.
Buying new
- Pros: sealed box, guaranteed complete, full manufacturer support.
- Cons: full price, and only for sets still on sale. Once a set is retired, new copies become rare and expensive.
Buying used from a private seller
- Pros: often the cheapest option.
- Cons: completeness is rarely checked, pieces are often mixed with other sets, and parts may need cleaning. Returns are usually not possible.
Buying refurbished
- Pros: lower price than new, sets checked piece by piece, cleaned and disinfected, a clear condition grade and a return policy. It's also the best way to find retired sets.
- Cons: not sealed; the box may show wear depending on the grade.

Our recommendation
For current sets on a tight budget, refurbished saves money with fewer risks than a random second-hand listing. For retired favourites like the Millennium Falcon 75192 or the Grand Carousel 10196, refurbished is often the only realistic option.

FAQ
Is used LEGO worth it?
Yes, especially when the set has been checked for completeness and cleaned, as with refurbished sets.
Why is refurbished LEGO cheaper than new?
Because it has had a previous owner and the box may show wear, even though the set itself is complete.
