LEGO usually produces a Technic set for two or three years before retiring it. After that, prices are set by the pre-owned market. Some retired sets are collected for their history, others because nothing newer does the same job as well. Here are the ones collectors look for.

Motorized Excavator 8043

A Power Functions classic from 2010 with linear actuators driven by motors. It remains one of the most loved excavators ever made by LEGO, and many builders still prefer it to newer app-controlled versions because it works with a simple IR remote.

Mercedes-Benz Unimog U400 8110

A 2011 flagship with portal axles, a pneumatic crane and a Power Functions motor. Its mix of mechanics and pneumatics makes it a collector favourite.

Logging Truck 9397

A big truck with a motorised crane, from 2012. It's a great example of the "one motor, many functions" approach that defined Power Functions-era Technic.

Crawler Crane 42042 and Mobile Crane 8053

Two cranes from different eras, both with long booms and lots of mechanical interest. They look spectacular in a display.

Grand Prix Racer 42000

The very first set numbered in the "42xxx" range (2013): a large open-wheel racer with a V8 and suspension. A nice piece of Technic history.

Retired supercars

The Bugatti Chiron 42083 and Lamborghini Sián 42115 are both retired and remain in demand as display pieces.

How to buy a retired set safely

  • Read the condition carefully: is it complete, are the instructions included, is the box original?
  • For motorised sets, check that every motor, battery box and receiver is listed.
  • Compare Used, Imperfect Box and Like New options: the difference in price can be significant.

FAQ

Do retired LEGO Technic sets go up in value?

Some do, especially popular flagships, but prices vary. Buy the sets you'll enjoy building and displaying rather than as a guaranteed investment.

Where can I buy retired LEGO Technic sets?

On the pre-owned market. Look for sellers who state the condition and contents of each listing.
