Technic is different from classic LEGO: it uses beams, pins, axles and gears instead of studded bricks. A well-chosen first set teaches you these techniques without overwhelming you.

Tips for your first Technic build

  • Sort pins by colour: black pins have friction, blue pins are longer, beige pins are smooth.
  • Use the axle guides printed in the instructions to check lengths (they're shown 1:1).
  • Test moving parts as you go, especially gears and steering.

Which age is right?

Small Technic sets are designed for ages 8–10+. Large flagship models are labelled 18+ because of their length and complexity, not because of difficult techniques.
