The Liebherr R 9800 Excavator 42100 (2019) was a turning point for LEGO Technic: it was the first big set designed around the Control+ app. With 4,108 pieces and seven motors split across two smart hubs, it moves like a real mining excavator.

What it can do

  • Drive forwards, backwards and turn on its tracks.
  • Rotate the superstructure 360°.
  • Raise and lower the boom, move the stick and tilt the bucket.
  • Control everything from a smartphone, including a "one-touch" mode and a joystick mode.

Building it

The build is long (often 15+ hours) and repetitive in places, especially the tracks. Test each motor as you go, using the app, before closing the sections. Keep the two hubs charged with fresh batteries during testing.

Is it still worth it?

Yes. Even after newer sets like the Cat D11 Bulldozer 42131, the R 9800 remains one of the most impressive motorised Technic models. It is retired, so pre-owned copies are the way to get one.
