Gearboxes are what make Technic feel like real engineering. Here's a simple guide to the types you'll find in sets.

Sequential gearboxes

Used in supercars like the Lamborghini Sián 42115 and Bugatti Chiron 42083. Paddle shifters rotate a selector drum, which engages one gear at a time, exactly like a real sequential transmission.

Distribution gearboxes

Found in machines like the Rough Terrain Crane 42082 and Airbus H175 42145. A single motor drives several functions, and a selector chooses which one receives power.

Differentials

Differentials let the left and right wheels turn at different speeds in corners. Off-roaders like the Land Rover Defender 42110 use several of them for permanent four-wheel drive.

Clutch gears

The white "clutch gear" slips when too much force is applied, protecting functions like winches and steering from damage.

Troubleshooting

  • Gears skipping? Check that the gearbox frame isn't flexing.
  • Gear won't engage? Look for a selector ring placed upside down.
  • Everything stiff? A bush may be pressed too tightly against a gear.

FAQ

What is a sequential gearbox in LEGO Technic?

A gearbox where you shift one gear at a time with a lever or paddles, as in the Technic supercars.

Why does my LEGO Technic gearbox skip?

Usually because the frame flexes or a gear is slightly misaligned; reinforce the frame and check each axle.
