If you're buying older Technic sets, you'll meet Power Functions (2007–2018). Newer sets use Powered Up / Control+. Here's how they differ.
Power Functions
- Infrared remote control, battery boxes and separate receivers.
- Motors: M, L, XL and servo motors with a stackable connector.
- Used in classics like the Motorized Excavator 8043, the Logging Truck 9397, and the Crawler Crane 42042.
Powered Up / Control+
- Bluetooth hubs controlled by an app or by a dedicated remote.
- Smart motors with position sensors.
- Used in sets like the Liebherr R 9800 and Cat D11.
Which is better?
Powered Up is more precise and integrates with apps. Power Functions is simpler, works with a physical remote and is loved by builders who make their own motorised models (MOCs).
Buying tips
For Power Functions sets, check that the IR receiver, battery box and remote are included. For Powered Up sets, check the hub and motors. In both cases, ask about the battery compartment condition.
